NETGEAR Nighthawk M1 Mobile Hotspot 4G LTE Router (MR1100)
When you live in a rural small town community, it can be very difficult to get a reliable high-speed internet provider. I found myself in a bit of a predicament a few months back with getting a broadband service that would provide our home with anything more than 1 or 2 Mbits of upload capacity and virtually nothing above 25Mbits on the download side.
To put it in perspective, we were limited to having barely enough bandwidth to allow for one person out of our family of four the ability to get a decent data stream for watching videos or gaming. Let alone, the rest of the family was basically able to only watch SD (standard definition) movies with continuous circles of endless buffering on virtually every other device in our household.
That is when we decided to start looking outside the traditional Internet Service Providers (ISP’s) in our area and explore what alternatives to DSL or Cable internet were available in our rural area.
With my fingers crossed, I put in my application for Starlink and put down my deposit in February of this year. I was thrilled about the possibility of having a connection that would be up to 100x the speed of what was currently available to us.
And… Well…. At the time of writing this in AUGUST of 2021, we are still waiting…
That is when my wife and I had an epiphany.
What about LTE services through a wireless cellular provider? I mean AT&T in our area rocks the speed tests and so we began our journey down the mobile hotspot rabbit hole.
I did. However, search and do some homework and extensive research on other providers such as T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint, and other not-so-known entities. But nothing seemed to provide the level of throughput we wanted to allow our whole family to truly stream and game like we wanted to. I mean, geez, if you found an excellent hotspot service plan, you were basically going to break the bank, the college fund, and our retirement plan just to get a device that was barely above the line of being a good enough hotspot device.
Then we found the NETGEAR Nighthawk M1 4G LTE Router
That is when the NETGEAR Nighthawk M1 Mobile Hotspot 4G LTE Router (MR1100) caught my eye. With its overall simplicity, combined with the ability to add an external antenna, there was suddenly a glimmer of hope that we could finally have our cake and eat it too!

We took the plunge (Conclusion)
After using the NETGEAR Nighthawk M1 for a few months now, I am happy to say that we are thrilled with the results! Although we have variable speeds throughout the day.
We can reliably maintain a loaded throughput of 30Mbits – 75Mbits+ on our download stream and 15Mbits – 50Mbits of upload throughput.
This has been a life-changer for us. As a tech nerd that works from home with teenagers that (depending on the school’s current -mood- policies) have to do classwork from we can all be part of the modern world.
